Tasmania Police are investigating a shooting after a man was wounded during an alleged altercation at a home in Launceston’s suburb of Mowbray early Saturday morning.
Emergency services were called to a property on Pleasant Street following reports of a disturbance, where a man was found with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Paramedics treated the victim before transporting him to hospital for further care. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police say the shooting occurred during what has been described as an “altercation” between people at the residence. Investigators believe the individuals involved may have known each other, although the circumstances leading up to the gun being fired are still under investigation.
Officers attended the scene shortly after the incident and secured the area while detectives began collecting evidence.
Authorities are now working to identify and locate another person believed to be involved in the altercation.
So far, no arrests have been made, and investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward as they piece together exactly what happened.
Police have not publicly confirmed the type of firearm used.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about firearms being used in disputes across northern Tasmania. While shootings remain relatively uncommon in the region, police continue to monitor illegal firearm activity and violent incidents closely.
For residents in Mowbray and surrounding Launceston suburbs, Saturday’s shooting has left neighbours shaken, with many waking to the sound of emergency vehicles responding in the early hours of the morning.
Tasmania Police say the investigation remains active and more information will be released as it becomes available.
Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area or has relevant information is encouraged to contact police.
For now, detectives are focused on determining how the altercation escalated to gunfire and ensuring those responsible are identified.
